Alcohol ink is an intriguing medium I began experimenting with recently. It is very fast drying and works best on slick surfaces. I thought I might try it on canvas with gesso applied to keep the surface non porous. The medium is fast-drying and highly pigmented. I especially like the fact that the inks are transparent and extremely vibrant.

So once the ink was applied to the substrate, the alcohol evaporated leaving the dye behind. I re-wet it with rubbing alcohol and watched unique layering effects develop. A little blowing with a hair dryer moved the ink around the canvas. The downside is the fumes are highly toxic. So, I always use my trusty mask, an air filter machine, and keep the outside door open. I also have to wear gloves because alcohol ink stains, a lot.

I have a long way to go but am enjoying the process. I have tried combining this technique with the flower abrasion technique used on my previous artwork series but, so far, I’m not a fan of what is happening. I will keep working at my ideas and will be excited to see what develops.

Stay in touch.
