I began making art again shortly after my father’s passing. I found the process of making art turned my sadness to joy. The outpouring of designs just kept coming. I was working on my dining room table at the time and the art overtook the room. This begged the question, “What do I do with all of this?”

At first, local businesses accepted the art. This was followed by local art shows and galleries. I loved watching the joy of others while they viewed the art. It even won some awards! This sense of community was so important to me because the making of art is such a singular activity and it felt great to share it!

I am generally a purpose driven individual and I tried to imagine the ultimate dream of where the art could go and what it could do. I spent time soul searching and it caused me to seek out avenues that would allow me to continue to contribute to community with the art. It was during this time that I stumbled upon Surface Pattern Design. I realized the my designs would make lovely decorations on rugs and pillows.

While following the thread of surface pattern design, I found sites describing women in communities who partnered with a company who paid them for their weaving of surface decoration on rugs. The women were previously lower class, ignored, or marginalized. But they rose above being called “untouchable” through self employment. I wanted to be part of that.

I knew my dream of surface pattern design would involve some time and education on my part (more on this later in future blogs). In the meantime, I made a decision that would impact the current art sales. I choose to partner with Joyce Meyer Ministries and have a portion of the proceeds set aside for digging water wells, rescuing women and girls from trafficking, and help children receive education and life skills so they can support themselves and not be sold into marriage against their will.

The journey of making art continues. Keep an eye open for where it leads! All designs are available for license.
